Having Goals and Staying Motivated To Achieve Them

I was in a Weight Watchers class years ago and everyone was talking about how to stay motivated to exercise and eat right. One of the class members shared that she had read an article by a therapist who said that these three words have a lot of power,  ACT AS IF…. you fill in the blank however it pertains to you. I have not thought about this saying for a long time but back then it was very helpful to me. I used it to keep up with my daily walk. Walking is not so much fun when you are over weight. I decided to ACT AS IF …I like to exercise.  Well if I liked to exercise I would put on the work out clothes and go for a walk every day. So that is what I did and eventually I did like it. Walking helped me to lose weight and the more weight I lost the easier it was to walk faster. The faster I walked the more calories I burned in a shorter period of time and the better I felt. I acted my way to liking exercise.

In his book The Ultimate Weight Solution Dr Phil says,” sometimes you have to behave yourself to success.” He talks about this tried and true formula  BE-DO-HAVE. BE committed, DO what it takes, and you will HAVE what you want. It really is that simple, we just talk our selves out of  doing it.

What do people who achieve their goals do differently than those who don’t? They are willing to do whatever it takes to get there. They don’t make excuses for why they didn’t do well or can’t do it. Instead they find a way to succeed. There will never be a perfect time in our lives to lose weight, there will always be challenges and stress that make us emotional eaters want to find comfort in food. There will continue to be celebrations and activities that revolve around food. That is reality and we have to learn how to navigate them with out compromising our desire to eat healthy, lose weight or maintain our weight. This week it is the Superbowl, next week it will be something else.

Today I was thinking about what my goals are right now and how I want to go about achieving them. I am 10 pounds over my goal weight and I want to get back to that weight. I look better and feel better at that weight so what am I waiting for? To do this it has to be a priority and I have to work harder at it than I have been. I cook great healthy food, I just need to eat less of it for losing weight and move my body more!   Dr Oz says to think of what we are eating as a prescription for our health. I love that !

The habits that helped me reach my goal before were:

  • keeping a food journal writing down everything I ate
  • exercising 6 times a week, including walking and light weight training
  • planning my dinner menu ahead of time and shopping accordingly
  • positive thinking and affirmations
  • ACT AS IF… my needs come first!

I will BE committed, I will DO what it takes and I will HAVE what I want!

Now my question to you is, how would you fill in the blank, ACT AS IF………..?

What a powerful post to read first thing this morning! You always know just exactly what to say to get me to re-focus! Thanks Tami!

I still think you should be a Weight Watcher leader!!!

Well Carol I needed to hear what I had to say! Every once in a while I have to dig out the books that have helped me in the past and do a little reading so I can recharge and change my thought pattern. I figure if it can help me it might be helpful to someone else.

I am glad that you found it to be of value.I appreciate the feed back too! You are a great support.

I might be able to reach more people with the blog if I get the word out there about it. From what I have heard from past WW leaders say they really limit the type of things you are allowed to share with the members. On the blog I can share what ever I feel inspired to say.

Great post!! I workout out with a personal trainer 3x per week and I truly have to “act as if I already look how I want to look.” She has me doing full push-ups, lunges, and all kinds of other things throughout the gym. People watch, because it’s interesting to see what she is going to make me do next. I get a lot of compliments from people…who say…”your working so hard…keep it up…” I have to not think about what my rear end or stomach may look like in the moment of doing the exercise, since that would affect my intensity and focus.

Love the Dr. Phil advice too. I’ve actually never read that book..I might have to check it out 🙂

I love how you are using the Act As IF… that is great that you are working out with a trainer at a gym! It sounds like your trainer is really pushing you and you are giving it all you’ve got. Keep up the good work.

Dr Phil’s book was full of good advice and I go back from time to time to brush up his thoughts and steps to change my self talk.

    Act as if….

-I don’t look in the mirror and say negative things about my body.
-I have the confidence to let my light shine and not think that I am un-datable due to my ‘size’
-I am making fitness my priority
    -I am worth it
    -Food doesn’t rule my life
    -I kick arse!

I stumbled back on your blog after you stumbled on mine and I LOVE it!

One knows that men’s life seems to be not very cheap, however people require money for different stuff and not every man earns big sums money. Hence to receive fast loans or just secured loan would be good solution.
