Road Trip / Packing Revelation / Mosquitoes

Packing Revelation

Saturday I had a packing revelation. I had forgotten how much less room smaller sized clothes take up in my suitcase! The only drawback was that it allowed me to over pack even more than usual! At the last minute daughter Katy helped me pull a few things out to lighten the load. You can never be certain what the weather is going to be like this time of year in the Midwest, it might rain, it could be hot and it is usually humid. Different weather conditions call for different apparel and then of course one must have the appropriate shoes for each outfit! I just can’t help myself, I like clothes, shoes and accessories. Let’s just say most of my closet is traveling with me.

Travel Day One

Breakfast was at 5:00AM Sunday at home in California. We had a snack at 10:30 when we stopped for gas in Reno, Nevada. Hubby Tom and Katy chose McDonalds for second breakfast and I went with a Kashi bar and a bottle of water. We were in the Nevada dessert at lunch time so I pulled off at a rest stop that had picnic tables. I packed our cooler with delicious ingredients for making sandwiches with fresh fruit, and veggies. Our sides included baked chips, healthy Organic Z bars and some dark chocolate. We got things set up on the picnic table and had just started making our sandwiches when we were invaded by a swarm of gigantic mosquitoes! At first we could not believe it, we are after all in the desert, at midday so where are these mosquitoes coming from? They were relentless and we quickly made our sandwiches, packed up and headed back to the van to eat. We were so itchy and disappointed that we couldn’t even enjoy our lunch! Thank goodness Katy had thought to pack some anti- itch cream as our bites were swelling up fast. These were no ordinary mosquitoes people, they were huge!

Why is it that mosquitoes like tender fair skinned people the best?  To make matters worse a couple of these pests hitchhiked with us and caused a bit of a warfare whenever they decided to make an appearance. Katy and I went a little wild trying to end their existence! We keep thinking about the cute skirts and shorts we want to wear and how the polk a dots on our legs were not part of the accessory package! We traveled from CA through Nevada, Utah and into Wyoming all in one day!

Day Two

I am happy to report that the mosquito bites are under control, itchy but the swelling is going down. We got up early and I had breakfast out of the cooler, a bagel thin, laughing cow cheese, fresh fruit, Greek yogurt and Starbucks instant coffee!

Today we made it all across Wyoming and well into NE.  We stopped off at Independence Rock to have our picnic lunch and we went for a 45 minute hike to the top of the rock. When the early settlers were making their way to the West they knew if they made it to this rock by July 4th they could make it through the mountains before snow fall. Many of them carved their names and the date into the rock. It was pretty neat to see and we were happy to get out of the car and have some exercise. Of course it is so much easier to climb rocks when you are thinner!

The views from the top of the rock were amazing!

We are in a hotel again tonight. We pick up my mother in law in the morning and take her with us as we make our way to yet another city in NE. She will be staying with another one of hubbies brothers and we will be staying with my parents. It will be a week of family gatherings on both sides of our families. Of course this involves lots of eating so I need to be sure and get my morning walks in and exercise great portion control when it comes to meal time!

Enjoying time away and being semi unplugged!

I love your trip log. It sounds like you travel like we do–packed cooler, picnic lunches and seeing America. I’ll definitely put Independence Rock on our list. With our daughter’s family on the other coast, we’re always looking for new, interesting sites along the way. Have a great time.
