Properly fitting shoes for running or walking make a huge difference not only in comfort but performance. A few years ago my podiatrist told me to go to a running store and get fitted for proper shoes for my daily walks.I was losing some of my toe nails which I guess often happens to runners or people who power walk. I had no idea this could happen from my fast walking!
Even though I am not a runner they were very helpful at the runners store. They watch how you walk and check for pronation and based on what they observe and the type of activity you do they can fit with you with the proper shoe. The cost of the shoes at the running store are the same as other retail outlets in my area. There are so many brands and so many different styles within each brand it can be overwhelming to figure out which shoe to go with. A little professional guidance makes this task so much easier.
I walk an aggressive outdoor 3 mile route in about 40 minutes. My body wants to run but my hips, knees and ankle can’t take the impact so I’ll keep walking! The Asics running shoes have been the best shoe for me for about the past 6 years. As advised by my podiatrist I replace my walking shoes every 500 miles or 6 months which every happens first. I can tell when they are needing to be replaced, even though they might still look good on the outside they don’t feel as supportive and comfortable at 500 miles.
I had to have my left ankle completely rebuilt after a bad accident shattered all of the bones in my ankle. Even though that was 13 years ago if I wear my shoes past that 500 mile mark I start getting ankle pain. When I get that new pair of shoes my feet and ankle are so happy!
I got a new pair just in time for Spring! They told me at the running store that running shoes run a little small so even though I wear an 8 1/2 in regular shoes, I wear a 10 in the Asics running shoe! I am not a runner but these shoes work for me since they are light weight, have a wide toe area and give me ankle support. Since I have been buying the proper style of shoe and the right size I haven’t lost any more toe nails.
Along with a good fitting shoe a great pair of socks can really make a difference in your comfort level. I discovered these extra cushioning comfort walking socks made by Thorlo. They are like walking on marshmallows!
See how there is extra cushioning on the top, heel and the bottom so there is no chance of anything rubbing or causing a blister. I love these socks! Also available for men so hubby Tom has them too. These socks are not cheap they run around $13 but sometimes the sporting good stores will have them on sale buy one get one for half off.
Since I usually wear my long hair pulled up when I walk I have to keep my ears warm. We first found these Earbags at REI. They are amazing. Since there is no band they don’t mess up your hair. If you get warm and don’t need them on they are small enough to slip into your pocket.
They are bandless but stay on incredibly well. My ears stay toasty warm since they are made from thinsulate material.I recently found them at QVC for a very reasonable price, two pair for about $17 plus shipping.
It is a great week here for walking outside. It was about 48 degrees this morning when I headed out so I had my mittens, jacket and Earbags on. But but the time I got to 1.5 miles I shed the gloves and jacket. The sun was shining and it warmed me up pretty fast.
I love walking outside and hearing the birds sing, soaking up the sunshine and breathing the fresh air. It is good for the body and the mind! I feel so much better when I walk and I find that I eat better when I exercise on a regular basis.
