Asics Running Shoes, Thorlo Socks, Ear Bags – Product Finds of Some Of My Favorite Things

Properly fitting shoes for running or walking make a huge difference not only in comfort but performance. A few years ago my podiatrist told me to go to a running store and get fitted for proper shoes for my daily walks.I was losing some of my toe nails which I guess often happens to runners or people who power walk. I had no idea this could happen from my fast walking!

Even though I am not a runner they were very helpful at the runners store. They watch how you walk and check for pronation and based on what they observe and the type of activity you do they can fit with you with the proper shoe. The cost of the shoes at the running store are the same as other retail outlets in my area. There are so many brands and so many different styles within each brand it can be overwhelming to figure out which shoe to go with. A little professional guidance makes this task so much easier.

I walk an aggressive outdoor 3 mile route in about 40 minutes. My body wants to run but my hips, knees and ankle can’t take the impact so I’ll keep walking! The Asics running shoes have been the best shoe for me for about the past 6 years. As advised by my podiatrist I replace my walking shoes every 500 miles or 6 months which every happens first. I can tell when they are needing to be replaced, even though they might still look good on the outside they don’t feel as supportive and comfortable at 500 miles.

I had to have my left ankle completely rebuilt after a bad accident shattered all of the bones in my ankle. Even though that was 13 years ago if I wear my shoes past that 500 mile mark I start getting ankle pain. When I get that new pair of shoes my feet and ankle are so happy!

I got a new pair just in time for Spring! They told me at the running store that running shoes run a little small so even though I wear an 8 1/2 in regular shoes, I wear a 10 in the Asics running shoe!  I am not a runner but these shoes work for me since they are light weight, have a wide toe area and give me ankle support. Since I have been buying the proper style of shoe and the right size I haven’t lost any more toe nails.

Along with a good fitting shoe a great pair of socks can really make a difference in your comfort level. I discovered these extra cushioning comfort walking socks made by Thorlo. They are like walking on marshmallows!

See how there is extra cushioning on the top, heel and the bottom so there is no chance of anything rubbing or causing a blister. I love these socks! Also available for men so hubby Tom has them too. These socks are not cheap they run around $13 but sometimes the sporting good stores will have them on sale buy one get one for half off.

Since I usually wear my long hair pulled up when I walk I have to keep my ears warm. We first found these Earbags at REI. They are amazing. Since there is no band they don’t mess up  your hair. If you get warm and don’t need them on they are small enough to slip into your pocket.

They are bandless but stay on incredibly well. My ears stay toasty warm since they are made from thinsulate material.I recently found them at QVC for a very reasonable price, two pair for about $17 plus shipping.

Nutmeg Notes

It is a great week here for walking outside. It was about 48 degrees this morning when I headed out so I had my mittens, jacket and Earbags on. But but the time I got to 1.5 miles I shed the gloves and jacket. The sun was shining and it warmed me up pretty fast.

I love walking outside and hearing the birds sing, soaking up the sunshine and breathing the fresh air. It is good for the body and the mind! I feel so much better when I walk and I find that I eat better when I exercise on a regular basis.

For the majority of my running over the years, I have used the Asics brand!! Once I met the world record holder in the marathon, and he was wearing the most beautiful yellow Asics shoes with HIS name on them 🙂

Several years ago I got one of the best pieces of fitness advice from a female friend when I was complaining of getting blisters on my feet. She said the magic word, Vaseline, lol, I’ve been blister free ever since!

I have heard that about vaseline Dr J. Yellow Asics, wow I like blue the best!

I’ve been buying my workout shoes from a running store for years. Mine seems to be a bit more expensive though. And I use Birkenstock insoles in my running shoes for extra arch support, thanks to my neuroma.

    1. Tami says:

Karen I didn’t know there were Birkenstock insoles. I learn so much from the readers of my blog!

I have had Asics for the last couple of years and I love them! But as I am beginning to up the running, I have decided to go to the running store and have them check me out and recommend the best shoes for me.

I was looking at the pictures of your walking route, and I see that you live in Northern California and I am curious as to what city? I live in Nor Cal too.

Welcome to my blog Morgan! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. Great idea to get the help from a good running shoe store. They have been trained to give you the best fit!

Too funny! I have a post started on workout shoes & how important it is to buy shoes that fit & are right for the specific sport you are doing & to replace them regularly! I did this due to my constant need to try shoes on & change each time due to how bad my feet are!

I used to wear Asics but have not been able to find a pair that works for my feet at his point in my life – super wide, flat, bunions, major overpronation & padding in the forefoot gone due to age.. lots of issues. Right now I am wearing a Nike pair that actually have a area cut out with material for the bunions to fit in.. LOVE IT! But I do try each time as my feet keep changing!

I have to wear double layer socks as well due to the feet issues!

    Thx for the reviews!

    1. Tami says:

I look forward to your post about shoes Jody! I feel your pain, I have bad feet too and this ankle to deal with so shoes and socks are very important to me!

I have a bunion to deal with also. These shoes have worked really well for me. Never heard of those Nike shoes with the cut out for the bunion. Very cool!

      Aging isn’t for sissies!

It was a lovely day here for walking outdoors yesterday, and in a startling coincidence, I was wearing Asics shoes and Thorlo socks! (I wear Asics socks in the summer. They’re a bit lighter than Thorlo and they hug my feet, just like my Asics shoes.) I’m embarrassed to admit I have 4 pairs of Asics: walking, every day wear, and gym-only. I’m pitiful. 🙂

    1. Tami says:

That made me smile Cammy! I will have to look for the Asics socks, thanks for telling me about them.

Four pair of Asics – you might have an addiction!

  7. Dawne says:

I was so disappointed when my local running store suggested I switch from Asics to Saucony. I miss my Asics, as they were what got me started in running. Having a good shoes makes such a different in my feet. I’m going to try the Vaseline someone mentioned above.

  8. Carol says:

I’ve been thinking about going to our local Running Store…I’ve been wearing Merril brand shoes for walking & I’m in more pain than I should be having! They have been advertising on TV quite a bit lately.
My favorite exercise is walking…will never & have never been a runner!

I love those ear bags..easy to put on & can just be slipped into a pocket.

    1. Tami says:

Oh Carol you should go get sized at the running store. It made a world of difference for me.

Yes, the earbags are so easy to pop in your pockets if you ears get too warm!

  9. Weight Watcher Wannabe says:

I use to wear the Asics shoes when I was nursing.. They were the best shoes I ever owned, pounding on the hard hospital floors all night long was not so bad when I wore them.. Don’t you just love it when you find something thats great.

    1. Tami says:

I didn’t know you were a nurse! I bet the shoes made a huge difference in how you felt at the end of a long shift!

When I find something I like I just have to share it!
