Small Change Challenge!

I was out for my morning walk when I happened to look down at the sidewalk and saw some loose change. It was quite a bit of change, someone had a large hole in their pocket! I bent down and picked it up. At first, I thought about a little saying that I was taught when I was a small girl. “See a penny, pick it up, all the day you’ll have good luck.”  Does anyone else remember that saying?

I got to thinking about how loose change on it’s own won’t buy much today. However; when you put change in a container and keep adding to it, that small change starts to build up! Before you know it you have dollars!

You already know where I am going with this! :) It is the same with small changes regarding our healthy choices. On it’s own one small change in our choices might not seem like much but when we continue to make that small change a healthy choice day after day, it creates a bigger change in our overall health! Those days turn into weeks and the weeks turn into months and pretty soon you have a whole year of healthy changes behind you!

I have found it much easier to make small changes along the way to improve my health. It’s too overwhelming to me to try and change several things at once! As you know I gained 6 pounds and I keep losing one or two pounds and then gain it back! This little weight gain has put me right square in between a size 4 and a 6. Arrrgh! The 4′s are too tight and the 6′s are too baggy! There is the option of gaining a few more pounds and the 6′s would fit The only thing to do is buckle down and lose those annoying 6 pounds! I just need to make a few small changes and mornings in my closet will be happy again. Insert singing birds here!

Small Change Challenge Guidelines

The challenge: You choose a small change you want to work on that will improve your healthy lifestyle. It doesn’t have to be about losing weight but it needs to be about improving your health. You can choose a new challenge each week or continue to work on the same challenge all four weeks.

When: Starts June 1, 2011 and ends June 29, 2011.

Prizes:

There will be two random drawings including all participants who complete the four week challenge!  One prize is Bob Greene’s New Book 20 Years Younger! You can read my previous review of this book here. It’s packed full of great information, food plans, skin care tips, exercise tips and recipes!

A second random drawing winner who completes the four week challenge will get a prize package including a few of my favorite little kitchen items! More details and photos to come! And you thought favorite things ended with Oprah! Not so my friends!

Edited to add a third prize! Clean Eating Quick and Easy Meals cook book.

All you have to do is challenge yourself to make a small change for 4 weeks! Easy peasy – you can do it!

How to participate:

1. Leave me a comment on this post by midnight Pacific Time, June 1, 2011 telling me you are going to participate in the Small Change Challenge. This gets you one entry for the prizes. On June 1st there will be a kick off post for the challenge and I will share what my small change goal will be. Everyone in the challenge will leave a comment on that post stating what small change goal they are working on the first week. Remember to pick just one small thing to work on each week.

2. Bloggers must post about the Small Change Challenge on your blog with a link to this post, on or before June 1st, feel free to use the Small Change Challenge Image in your post or put it on your side bar. Come back and leave me a link to your post in the comment section of this post. This gets you a second entry for the prizes. You don’t have to have a blog to participate. You can post your small change challenge goals and updates on my weekly posts about the challenge.

3. Like the Nutmeg Notebook Facebook page or mention the Small Change Challenge with a link to this post on your Facebook page and leave me a comment and link to your facebook comment on this post telling me you did for an additional entry in the giveaways.

4. Follow me on Twitter or tweet about the Small Change Challenge and leave me a comment on this post that you did for an additional entry for the giveaways.

For each one of the steps above that you complete you must leave me a separate comment on this post telling me you did.

Weekly Updates: There will be a Small Change Challenge kick off post on June 1st. Everyone participating will leave a comment about their small change goal for that week. Each Wednesday starting with June 8th, we will post how we are doing.  You must check in each Wednesday on my Small Change Challenge Post and leave a comment letting me know how you did on your small change goal that week. Let me know if you are going to work on a new challenge the next week or continue with your first one.

Bloggers will post an update sometime on their blog each week before or on each Wednesday in June. Then on my Wednesday Small Change Challenge post, leave a comment about your progress and a link to the challenge update post on your blog. The link allows others in the challenge to follow you! We can support and encourage each other to success!

The Wednesday Small Change Challenge posts here will include tips and little factoids about what else? Small changes!

I am so excited about the Small Change Challenge!  A year from now we can be in the same place we are right now or we can start today with making small changes and improving our health. The time is going to pass either way, with us having made a change or not. Let’s choose to change together!

    I agree on the whole “small changes” way to go about getting to a goal. I used to be all or nothing. I would be doing great, then have a cheeseburger, get mad at myself and then eat like shit for weeks at a time.

    Now I have a burger, and move on – its working so far! I’ll let you know soon if I decide to do your challenge. :D

      Biz I use to have that all or nothing thinking too! It kept me in a cycle of yo – yo dieting for most of my adult life. It is a difficult mindset to break!

      I hope you decide to join the challenge. The more people who are in it the more fun it will be and the more positive energy the challenge will have. Great things happen when they are done as a group!

    It’s a great premise for a challenge, Tami. I’m so tempting since it’s yours… but am a bit challenged out at the moment. However, I may be doing a very specialized challenge. I’ve drafted the post and just have to decide if I am committing or not.

      I understand about being challenged out! After the Hot 100 I didn’t think I would ever do a challenge again! That one was way too long for me. That’s why I went with one month -shorter and not too demanding or too many holidays!

    Fantastic idea Tami! I have an uncle, who walks almost every day and picks up change he sees on the sidewalk…do you know, to date, I think he has found over 200 dollars? I love the way you link weight loss to this idea.

    I used to be like Biz too….tried to do good and then when I knew I was not so good, I would just through in the towel and keep on eating crap. WW changed that for me. It has taught me, if nothing else, bad days happen, but they don’t have to be the end all.

      That all or nothing thinking is so dangerous and I have been there and done that too. It is such a learning curve when you decide to change your life style.

    The all or nothing mentality has to be one of the hardest habits to break! (I could have written what Biz said myself.) I truly believe one of the differences between dieting and lifestyle is the ability to do just that.

      I have to agree with you Helen. I think many of us who have had weight issues have been engaging in the all or nothing thinking for years! It ruled most of my adult life and is the reason I yo-yo dieted! Trying to be perfect sets us up for failure from day one.

    This is great!
    My small change is something that I’ve really been working on for the past 2 months, and that is to stop mindlessly munching at work! There are samples everywhere and I used to use the excuse that I should “try the food in order to tell customers about it”, but something it’s food I’ve already had! So, I’m only tasting if I’m hungry or if it’s a UNIQUE food. So far…I’m doing….ok :)

If you read my feet, food & exercise posts, you already know that I am working on nipping a couple extra pounds off of me – this due to what I can’t do with my feet issues… so I am already working small changes.     Me too. I’m to late, but I’m with you in spirit, anyway. My challenge to myself will be to drink All 8 Glasses of Water, every day. I’ve gotten very lax about this and it does make a big difference. Also it’s a great thing to do in the summer. I’m going now to find your FB page.
