Birthday Adventures in Lake Tahoe & Planning for Surgery…

Saturday was my birthday – don’t you love it when your birthday lands on a weekend? Me too! Since I love the mountains I planned a day to Lake Tahoe for the family! The mountain temperatures are cooler, the air smells of pine and the lake is beautiful. We started off with a few photos while everyone was looking fresh! Katy and I got haircuts this week from a new stylist-she did a great job!

All packed and ready to go! Katy and her boyfriend Esau in the back and son David to the right.

Tahoe here we come…

The driver looks happy!

First stop was the Tahoe dam in Tahoe City. We got to talk to the water master so that was pretty cool.

Of course we had to go for a hike. This was short but steep hike up to Eagles Rock on the North West side of the lake.

The reward at the end of the trail is a magnificent view of  Lake Tahoe.

Some people just had to go to the next highest cliff!

I planned an easy hike so we would be clean enough to go out for a nice lunch at the West Shore Cafe. The patio is right on the lake and there is even seating out on a pier. We enjoyed a lovely view from our table.

You can drive your boat right up to the pier and drop off your passengers for lunch.

For appetizers we had a basket of sweet potato and regular fries with several dipping sauces.

There was also a basket of corn fritters. Delicious!

I balanced it all out by ordering a salad with blackened shrimp.

Esau enjoyed BBQ pork shanks and he took food photos on that side of the table for me. The blog has become a family affair!

Katy went with the fish and chips.

Tom and David went with burgers and yes there were even more fries! Needless to say, after lunch everyone was sleepy from all that grease and carbs!

I saved room for dessert but nothing on the dessert menu appealed to me! Can you believe it? A birthday with no dessert! This has to be a first for me. After lunch there was more sight seeing including this amazing water fall.

Of course the guys once again had to find the highest peak to climb.

This is a view of Emerald Bay and the only island on Lake Tahoe.

Sorry for the poor quality of this photo ( it was taken through the windshield) I wanted to show you how much snow there was on the mountains. There was even one ski resort open on Saturday and we saw people skiing!

Nutmeg Notes

It was a fabulous day spent in the mountains which is one of my favorite places to visit. My dream would be to have a summer home in the mountains. I love the forest and the cool temperatures. There is bike riding, hiking and water adventures to enjoy. I wouldn’t want to be there in the winter though-I don’t like the snow!

Oral Surgery

About a year and a half ago I started the process of straightening my teeth with Invisalign braces. I have finally graduated to retainers and I am enjoying having straight teeth for the first time in my life! My teeth are straight but in the process of moving my teeth I had some gum tissue loss on my lower jaw. Unfortunately tomorrow I have to have surgery involving a soft tissue graft. The surgeon will be taking a skin graft from the roof of my mouth -ouch is right and attaching it to the area in need! At my pre-op appointment they told me that day 3 or 4 post surgery will be my roughest day. They made some special retainers for me to wear that will help keep my teeth in alignment as well as cover the palette where the tissue graft will come from. They said to expect a lot of bruising (since I am fair complected) and swelling. Oh joy! I’m really not nervous but I know it’s not going to be pleasant and I just look forward to having this all behind me.

I will be on a softer high protein diet for a while. I am thinking protein smoothies, scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, nut butters and Greek yogurt. With my Blendtec blender we can toss just about anything into it and have it come out smooth. I don’t know what affect this will have on my weight. I know I won’t be able to exercise for a few days and that alone usually equals weight gain for me. Perhaps the caloric restriction will help counter that – I will just have to wait and see.

Since there won’t be a lot of cooking going on here this week if I feel up to blogging I will be hosting a giveaway and doing some product reviews!

I am going to stock up the freezer by making some home made frozen yogurt today and perhaps some strawberry ice cream or strawberry coconut ice cream and make a grocery store run for soft foods. Then clean my house and tie up a few loose ends. I am a bit of a neat freak so I like everything in it’s place and a place for everything. When I don’t feel well, I can’t stand for my house to be out of order-in fact I think it makes me feel worse if things aren’t clean and organized. Does clutter bother you?

Delurking to say happy birthday, and you have the most gorgeous blue eyes!

Ouch on the gum graft. I had one ages and ages ago (literally over 20 years) and lived to tell the tale, though. Best wishes!

    1. Tami says:

Amanda thank you for delurking and leaving a comment. I can thank my mom and dad for my blue eyes! They passed them along to all of their kids!

Good to know you survived the gum graft! I read some horror stories on the web!

Thanks again for the well wishes and I hope you’ll comment again! :)

Happy belated birthday! Your hair looks FABULOUS! And what a fantastic day! Healthy time outside and good food? Perfect. I’d be all over the sweet potato fries and corn fritters- yum! Hope the surgery isn’t too bad!

    1. Tami says:

Thank you Erica! Yep, it was good food, outdoor fun and time spent with my loved ones, a perfect combination for a lovely birthday!

    1. Tami says:

Thanks Roz! I am stocked up on frozen fruit, Greek Yogurt, cottage cheese and protein powder so I think I am ready for a few days of smoothies!

  7. Nancy says:

Happy belated birthday, Tami and thank you for sharing your gorgeous pics with us. So beautiful and what a nice way to spend your birthday…the family hiking together. The food looks so good as I’m hungry as I write this. Will say a prayer for safe surgery and speedy healing.

Happy Birthday, Tammy! I remembered from last year that our birthday’s are very close together – mine is Saturday. And oh my goodness, do those pictures ever make me want to hurry up a trip to that area. We can’t wait to plan a summer trip out that way.

Sorry about the surgery. How about some cottage cheese for the soft, high protein foods?

Good luck! At least let us know that you are o.k. even if you don’t feel like a full post.

  9. Jody - Fit at 53 says:

You look beautiful!!!! I would so do cosmetic teeth stuff if I had the $$ but just getting them fixed for all the decay is enough $$ for now with me & UCLA! ;-) I have the implants being worked on now & 1 more tooth that might need major work – UGH- so I so understand. I hope it goes the best possible & will be thinking of you! You will look amazing afterward!

Love the Tahoe pics! I went there on my honeymoon many moons ago! ;-) So glad you had a great bday!

I hear you on your comment over at my place. No insurance here & it stinks. All this fighting & still not affordable for folks like me & my hubby.

    1. Tami says:

Jody so sorry you don’t have insurance! We so need insurance reform in this country!

Lake Tahoe would be a lovely place to honeymoon at! :) That is so neat! The gal who cut our hair this week got married on a boat on Lake Tahoe and I thought that sounded pretty neat too!

Thanks for the well wishes! I will let you all know how it goes…

Happy birthday! Love the photos; thanks for sharing. I hope your procedure goes smoothly and recovery is fast and easier than you expect. We’ve been into soft food here too with my teen’s wisdom teeth out last week. BTW – frozen peas are great ice packs for the face. We did such a great job icing him he hardly was swollen at all! He also found hard boiled eggs to be just as easy to eat as scrambled.

    1. Tami says:

Karen thanks for the reminder about the frozen peas – I have a bag in the freezer and I will so use them! They will send me home with one ice pack. After 24 hours I can start using some warm moist heat as well to try and help with the bruising.

Boiled eggs are a great idea-thanks for the tips. I will make some of those yet today so they are ready to go!

Thanks for the well wishes! :)

  11. Ann says:

Happy Birthday! I loved Tahoe the one time I was there. It is just amazing and hard to describe. Glad you enjoyed your day! I hope the surgery goes well. I don’t really do smoothies so I’m no help there. Good luck and let us know how it goes when you’re able.

    1. Tami says:

Ann you are so right, the color of the lake and the look and feel of the area is hard to put in words and photos don’t do it justice!

I will check in at least to let you all know I survived! :)

  12. fittingbackin says:

What beautiful pictures!! Happy belated birthday! And yes I LOVE when my birthday falls on a weekend – awesome!

I’ve never made a smoothie! Seriously! Well, I tried a green monster once and didn’t like it. :(

  13. Cammy@TippyToeDiet says:

You know I feel your (future) pain with the oral surgery! :) And that I wish you speedy healing! I just posted a request for new and interesting toppings for cottage cheese today, and the results are looking tasty!

After a few days, I was able to mix up a tuna salad that was relatively smooth. It sure was welcome respite

  14. Dawne Warkentin says:

What a great recount of your birthday! Happy birthday to a young looking woman! What a great looking family you have been blessed with! I loved your comment that you balanced out the fries with the salad. That’s a winning attitude right there and that’s part of the reason you look so great!

    1. Tami says:

Dawne thanks for the kind words! I feel pretty good about how I look at 52! You are as young as you feel they say and I think it’s true!

  15. Judy says:

    Hey Tami,
Hair is gorgeous as always! Good luck tomorrow with the surgery–it will be over soon and that will be a reward in itself! Try to take it easy and heal quickly! Your smile is shining already!!

I have had extra children at my house for a few days–the clutter and chaos is a bit much for me to take! I’m not a super clean freak but I do like things organized!
For now I will enjoy all of our activities and clean when they leave!! Win win for us all!

    1. Tami says:

Hi Judy! Thanks for the well wishes. I worked all day today getting the house in order so I can feel good about doing nothing for a few days. I also cooked most of the fresh veggies we had in stock so they won’t go to waste. I just hope someone around here eats them!

Extra kids do create a lot of mess and clutter! You have a good attitude about it though, you can clean it all up when they leave but enjoy their company while you have them. Such a good Aunt you are!

I can be relaxed about clutter or disorder for a few days but then it starts to get to me. For some reason if I don’t feel good a mess will bother me even more!

Thanks for well wishes! We will have to try and chat later this week if I don’t sound like I have marbles in my mouth!

  16. Judi says:

Happy Birthday, Tami. Saturday was my daughter’s birthday, too!
Loved seeing your pictures from Lake Tahoe. We lived in South Lake Tahoe for 2 years and have such happy memories of our time there. Such a beautiful place.
Good luck with your surgery and recovery. I was in a car accident years ago and fractured my jaw. My jaw was wired shut for 6 weeks! You would be amazed at the things we tried to puree so I could get it in a straw! But I think I survived on yogurt, ice cream and fruit! LOL
Hope you’ll be posting again soon, I look forward to your posts and recipes.

    1. Tami says:

Happy Birthday wishes to your daughter as well! How lucky you were to live in South Lake Tahoe for two years! I would love to have a summer home there.

Oh my goodness I can’t believe your jaw was wired shut for 6 weeks! I bet you missed chewing food by the end of that ordeal. Yogurt Ice cream and fruit sounds like my diet for the rest of the week!

Thanks for the kind words. I am so happy to know you enjoy the posts and recipes. The blog is a wonderful hobby for me and the greatest reward for my efforts are reading everyone’s comments. I hope to be posting later this week post surgery but I shall just see how I feel. Thank you Judi!

  17. Andrea@WellnessNotes says:

Happy belated Birthday! Saturday was the teenager’s birthday, too! What a beautiful way to celebrate your birthday! I love all the pictures!

Hope the surgery will go well!

    1. Tami says:

Andrea I am in good company sharing my birthday with your teenager! I hope his day was as wonderful as mine!

Thanks for the well wishes! :)

  18. Biz says:

Happy Belated Birthday!!! OMG, the scenery is absolutely gorgeous – and after seeing your daughters plate, I want fish and chips!

In high school the roof of my mouth was too narrow, so I had to wear a palate expander – I actually had a key and had to move it to slowly widen the roof of my mouth – for three months! I hardly ate anything and was probably my skinniest at 110 pounds – I am sure you’re weight will stay the same if not lose some.

    Hang in there!

    1. Tami says:

Oh Biz that mouth expander thing sounds awful! I don’t think I ever weighed 110 pounds! LOL! Well maybe for about 10 minutes!

  19. Jan says:

Wonderful pics. Happy birthday! (We are one day apart.)

I am the queen of protein smoothies. 1 cup greek yogurt (Fage has some of the highest protein content); 1 cup of frozen organic fruit (I choose a mix of berries); 6 oz skim milk; add sweetener of your choice as needed (Stevia mixture for me) blend on ultra high for creamy, frosty healthy eating. Makes enough to share, but I don’t!

It’s doubtful you will gain weight on a higher protein diet, unless you go for lots of that strawberry ice cream or frozen yogurt loaded with simple carbs :-)

    1. Tami says:

Oh Jan that protein smoothie sounds wonderful and I have everything in stock to make it! I love the Fat Free Fage Greek yogurt with Nu Naturals Vanilla Stevia drops and this will make a huge amount-all for me! If it’s all I get to eat there will be no sharing!

I will stick to the healthier protein packed eats. Even the homemade frozen vanilla yogurt I make is low on sugar.

I guess this will be a bit like going on a high protein low carb diet and I have always lost weight on those. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

Thanks for all the help-you are awesome! :)

  20. Nicole, RD says:

Happy Belated Birthday! Your weekend looks…breath-taking!

I wish you luck in your oral surgery. My mom has had this grafting done and she did really well. I will need to have it done at some point in the next 5 years or so due to receeding gum lines (ugh). I will be interested to hear your experience. Best wishes to you!

    1. Tami says:

Nicole thanks for the well wishes! What ever you do don’t go on the internet and read peoples horror stories about this procedure!

I will post how I do but we must remember that everyone’s pain level and experience is unique!

      Have a great day!

  21. Dr. J says:

Lake Tahoe is a treasure! I’ve been there in both winter and summer. My longest life friend lives there!

Sorry about the surgery, but in time it will just be a fading bad memory.

  22. janine says:

Happy happy birthday wishes, and best wishes for a quick recovery–with very little pain :-) Your pictures are absolutely gorgeous–and I loved seeing the whole family too. You can also do a very smooth and creamy cheesecake with cottage cheese, a little light sour cream, some lemon pudding powder, a bit of lemon crystal lite–and throw it in the blendtech. That’s it, and it tastes yummy. I’m thinking if you don’t want the sugar sub in the pudding, use a bit more of the crystal lite that you reviewed.

    1. Tami says:

Thanks for the great recipe idea Janine! It sounds delicious!

  23. renee@mykitchenadventures says:

Happy Birthday, Tami!! you look gorgeous and such a beautiful family! What a wonderful way to spend your special day!

good luck with the surgery! My daughter was suggested to have this same procedure done once she was done with braces ( she has a bit of recession on the bottom two teeth) but it is so $$ and we have no dental insurance, so I am forgoing getting it done until she has a job with insurance to pay for it, should she elect to do it. It’s not horrible…but at some point she will probably have to bite the bullet and get it done.

I am the same as you with clutter! and yes, it does make me feel worse too!!

I will be thinking of you!

    1. Tami says:

Renee thanks for the nice comments! Thank goodness we have very good insurance. It is a very expensive procedure to have done.
