A Little of This and That

Happy Tuesday everyone! We received some fun and interesting food gifts this year that I want to share with you. Not all of them have been sampled yet but we will be trying them in the days to come! So much food and so little time….

Check out these home made Honduran Tamales wrapped in banana leaves. Beautiful.

These tamales had (yes we ate all of them) amazing flavor and I would love to learn how to make them. Little cubes of potatoes, peas, chicken, rice and corn masa are wrapped up in banana leaves. I don’t know what seasonings were used but we loved these bundles of goodness! Tamales are now on my list of things to learn how to make. Fantastic!

A delicious assortment of Starbucks cocoa in three fun flavors. I tried the double chocolate and it was amazing!

A huge bowl of Meyer’s Lemons delivered to our front door elicited screams of delight from daughter Katy! I am not kidding, she gets so excited over these lemons every year. We will be using some to make the best Lemon Buttermilk Cupcakes you will ever eat! They get rave reviews from everyone who eats them. The rest of the lemons will be juiced and frozen in ice cube trays to be used and enjoyed through out the year. Soooooo – flavorful!

This popcorn and seasoning assortment is a clever idea! We can’t wait to try it as we are big, big popcorn eaters. What a nice low calorie healthy gift!

Dark chocolate rates high on my list. A little piece is so satisfying.

I enjoyed my sample sans wine and it was delightful! Dark, rich and no bitterness. Hubby Tom had his with a glass of wine and he was a happy camper. I’m not sure if the wine or the chocolate made him happy -hmmmm!

Have you seen these in the stores yet? This was a new product to me and I love these chickpea snacks. I like to make my own snacks of Spicy Roasted Chick Peas but The Good Bean has done all the work for me. Yummy! I will be looking for these in my local stores.

So far I have tried the Sea Salt and Cracked Pepper and love them both. Mmmmmmm so fun to munch on and pretty healthy too.

Not pictured are California pistachios- roasted and salted – a favorite snack in our house. Chocolate truffles, home made caramel corn – love that sweet and salty combo, home made biscotti and various bottles of wine! Needless to say our pantry is bursting right now and if we eat all of this stuff our pants will be bursting as well! Ha ha!

We can work off all those extra calories on our new treadmill! We decided we needed to get a treadmill so even on the cold, rainy days of Winter we can still get our walks in. What we love about the treadmill is being able to do intervals of speeding up and increasing the incline to maximize our work outs. As soon as my back recovers I will be back on the treadmill.

Nutmeg Notes

I am super excited about my iPad 2. Thank you hubby Tom! This thing is so amazing. I am on a learning curve here trying to figure out what all it can do and searching through all the apps available. The Kindle app allows you to download books – so convenient and very cool. Of course I am looking forward to having cookbooks and recipes on mine and using it in my kitchen. 🙂 I’m thinking that having my magazine subscriptions on the iPad is a good idea. You don’t have to store them that way and no worries about hurting your back hauling a load of old magazines out to the trash. There are apps for tracking your food, calories and exercise. It can be overwhelming trying to figure out which ones to get. For now I downloaded a couple of free ones to try and one that was a nominal fee.

Daughter Katy has offered to iPad sit whenever I am not using it – we wouldn’t want it to feel neglected now would we?

My back is getting better everyday – still very sore but the pain is so much better today. I am extremely tired of being a couch potato. Once it warms up today I am going to try and go for a walk outside – not a power walk mind you – just a stroll. I have cabin fever in the worse way!

After all the rich and sweet food indulgences we are ready for simple fresh food. Salads, grilled chicken, fish, yogurt and fresh fruit are now back on the menu.

What was a favorite gift that you gave or received?

Can you recommend any iPhone or iPad apps that you like?

We gave my parents a digital photo frame that I loaded up with photos! It was so captivating that I ended up going back and getting one for us!

Glad to hear you are on the mend. I would probably be considered behind the times but I seriously wanted a laptop computer and I got one! People can’t believe I chose it over an iPad, but I did. I have an iPhone so I don’t feel like I’m missing out lol!

I have 3 apps I use all the time: Grocery IQ (it’s a grocery list!), CardBank which is an app that lets you input all those annoying “store” discount cards thereby allowing your phone to be scanned at the register rather than carrying them all, and Keeper, which is a password keeper – invaluable if you’re suddently standing at the ATM and can’t remember your PIN. (I might be giving my age away with that one.)

Also? I love my treadmill, even though it is in the cold garage 😀

    1. Tami says:

Helen thank you for sharing your favorite apps with me. I am going to look at all three of those. I can so relate to standing at the ATM and drawing a “blank” as to what my pin is!
I hate carrying those memebership cards for store discounts and coupons – great app. I sometimes leave my written grocery store list at home and then I pray that someone is still home when I call and ask for it to be read to me!

As awesome as the iPad is I don’t think it can replace the lap top for me. I like having the larger screen to work on when I am posting to the blog and various other things. I am a slow learner when it comes to the techy stuff but eventually I figure it out.

Thanks againf for the apps advice. 🙂 Happy New Year!

Mmmm… those tamales sound delicious! I have yet to try a tamale. I need to find a good Mexican restaurant!

Loving those Chickpeas, too. I definitely keep an eye out for them!

Hope you had a wonderful holiday, Tami!

  3. Yum Yucky says:

Ohhh, how lovely. I’ve never seen a tamale like that before. I want it!

  4. fittingbackin says:

Those tamales look amazing! Glad you’re liking your iPad2! Your site looks great on it. 🙂 My favorite gift that I received is probably the one I gave myself – a plane ticket to a ski trip next week – WOO! (Me & Austin said no gifts – let’s just make our trip to Breckendridge our Christmas present to us!)

  5. Jody - Fit at 54 says:

Tami – glad your back is better but hoping you are even more so soon & able to use that treadmill in many fit & healthy ways! 🙂 How great for that & the iPad2 and that food – WOW!!! The food looks amazing but I rather have that treadmill & iPad! 🙂

No gift giving here but just enjoying family – although my youngest stepdaughter gave me a Peets coffee card!!!!

    Feel better soon!

  6. Dr. J says:

You sure hit the mother load of classy gifts this Christmas, Tami!

The Christmas treats you have been making all looked great too!

  7. Jan says:

Cool food gifts (chocolate, mmm…), and WTG getting that iPad! I think magazines are difficult to read on tablets – much more so compared to newspapers. The columns just do not seem to work right. I will be interested to find out what you discover regarding cooking and food apps!

  8. Renee@Mykitchenadventures says:

I’ve got treadmill envy Tami! What a nice thing to get! Mine is old, still works, but no read outs any longer! We have quite a bit of food gifts here too…they keep trying to haunt me into eating them all! lol

  9. Roz@weightingfor50 says:

Hi Tami. LOVE all the foodie gifts and the treadmill. And I have ipad envy!!! Hopefully I’ll get my hands on one myself soon. But a digital SLR is higher on the priority list! Have a very happy Thursday. Can’t wait to see what you do with those lemons!!!!

  10. Cammy@TippyToeDiet says:

Tamales are popular here, but most people use corn husks for wrappings. I was surprised a while back when I visited a restaurant that used banana leaves and some sort of palm leaf for wrappings.

The best gift I received was some super comfy pajamas from my grandmother. I don’t want to get dressed in the mornings. 🙂
