Guided Meditation For a Healthy Mind & Body

I had the great privilege to moderate a “Kale Chat” conference call for Chef AJ’s Ultimate Weight Loss Mastery Class last night. Our topic last night was how to navigate the holiday season without deviating from our whole food plant based health promoting lifestyle. One of the strategies I shared was using mediation to help keep a calm and stable brain chemistry. Although we love the holidays and look forward to them I think we can agree that they can be stressful. Even good stress has an impact on our minds and bodies. When our brain chemistry is calm and stable we can handle stress better, make wise choices about what we eat and enjoy a feeling of being in control. Eating nutritious healthy food goes a long way in providing a calm brain chemistry and keeping us in balance but we often need a little more help to fully reach where we want to be.

There is a series of guided imagery mediation CD’s that I have been using for years. They came to me as a recommendation from a friend who is a family therapist. She uses them herself and has her clients use these CD’s with tremendous results. I will admit that I was a bit skeptical at first but I purchased a set and started using them. Tom and I both were having trouble with getting to sleep so the Healthful Sleep was the first one we tried. The impact it had on helping us get to sleep was amazing. We would play it on our Bose Wave Radio in our bedroom and it wasn’t long before we were both nodding off within moments of starting the CD. Incredible! So many of our friends also use these CD’s and rave about them. Even your children can benefit from their use.

This is just a sample of the Health Journeys Guided Meditation CD’s that I have and use. I have them on my iPhone so I can travel with them and listen to them where ever I am. What is guided imagery? It’s a form of directed daydreaming. Beautiful soothing music plays in the background as Belleruth guides your mind through a series of thoughts to connect the mind and body. It’s perfect for beginners or advance students of meditation and it’s as simple as turning on the CD and listening. I love the series from psychotherapist Belleruth Naparstek who is a nationally recognized innovator in the field of guided imagery. Her guided imagery series is used in over 3000 hospitals and clinics. Even some health insurance companies recommend them to patients who are going to have surgery. I myself used them to prepare for my surgery and during my recovery. Beautiful soothing music plays in the background as Belleruth guides your mind through a series of thoughts to connect the mind and body. Where the mind goes the body follows. Sometimes my mind needs help in telling by body to follow!

A Little Nutmeg Nugget: When I started this blog in January of 2010 I followed what I understood to be a healthy version of the standard American diet, ironically also known as the “SAD” diet. As interest in my own health and how it was affected by the food I ate evolved, I transitioned to a whole food plant based diet also known as “WFPB” diet. I have wrestled with the fact that this blog still contains all those posts and recipes from the SAD way of eating I have left behind. I no longer advocate for anyone to eat that way. At this time I am leaving those recipes and posts here. It is a record of my journey and how I came to follow a WFPB way of eating. It is my hope that those who still come here for those old recipes will be curious about what I am doing now. Perhaps they will dip their toes across the line as I did and try some plant based recipes and learn more about the health benefits.
