Celebrating at Zocalo
Posted on 26 July 2010
Thank you for all of the wonderful birthday wishes and the nice comments everyone left! It really made my birthday extra special. I am truly blessed with a wonderful family, good friends and now all of my cyber friends!
Zocalo is where I chose to go for my birthday dinner on Friday night. It is gourmet Mexican food and it is fabulous! I don’t usually take photos when we go out to dinner as I want to just relax and enjoy every moment. However the family was agreeable to some photos for the blog as this food is so very special. We had about a 20 minute wait so that was a good time for photos, you can’t say no to the birthday girl!

The food was amazing. We all ordered something different and shared bites with one another. The dish of plantains with black beans and sour cream was my favorite and the first time I tried plantains. I loved the combination of sweet plantains with the earthy flavor of the black beans and the cool sour cream on top. I have to find a light recipe to prepare this dish as I was hooked by the first bite! The food and service were top notch.
Platanos, plantains with black beans and sour cream. Pan seared salmon potatoes and green beans.
Baked Tacos de cazuela Chicken enchiladas Salsa roja
El burrito with carnitas. Salmon Cozumel
The restaurant is located in the heart of Midtown and this beautiful Victorian home was up the street from Zocola’s. It looks like a doll house with all the cute detail work. I would love to see inside! I used my new camera with it’s incredible zoom to get this photo.
We came home and enjoyed the Fallen Chocolate Souffle Torte that Katy baked for me. It deserves a post all of it’s own! So check back to learn about my favorite low fat dessert cook book and this amazing recipe!
My family gave me the perfect birthday card and I just have to share it with you. What a difference living healthy makes. I actually had this kind of good day, skinny jeans and all!

What is your favorite ethnic food? Mine of course is Mexican.

What a classy looking family. You must be very proud of them and I KNOW they are proud of you. I can see it in their eyes! So glad you had a great birthday.
My favorite ethnic food is Japanese.
Thanks for sharing about your fabulous birthday. What great family pix, too. My favorite ethnic is Thai. I’m building a repertoire of recipes so that I can enjoy healthy Thai at home.
Tish you will have to share some of your healthy Thai recipes on your blog.
You have such a beautiful family! I had fancy mexican on Saturday – so good! I love all ethnic food but if I had to choose I’d say mexican!
I too love Mexican best. Hubbend cooked me my favorite Mexican meal or my birthday. I was shocked, it takes me three days to get it all done. I’m so glad you had a fantastic birthday too!
I love the card, and I can’t wait to see your recipe. That looks delish.
My favorite ethnic food is Mexican also. That’s what we’re having for dinner tonight

Oooh, those dishes look yummy! I’m so glad you had such an excellent night out with family.
I wonder if a plain yogurt topping on the plantains/black bean combo would be good. The cool, rich creaminess might be nice complement…
Great idea about the yogurt topping Cammy.
What an amazing birthday you had – and what a nice family outing. Great pictures.
The food looked so good – It makes me want to say Mexican is my favorite ethnic food, too, but we don’t have a really good place nearby – so I’ll say Italian and Greek.
I tried plantains when we went to Puerto Rico a couple of years ago – very interesting componant in many of the dishes there.
