The frozen banana adds natural sweetness. Make sure your banana skins have plenty of dark spots on them so they are very ripe and sweet. Then peel the bananas and freeze them for future use. Using frozen bananas helps to make the smoothie thick and creamy. The flax and chia seeds provided a boost of omega – 3s and fiber. A hint of vanilla and an optional date for extra sweetness round out this creamy, invigorating drink. Perfect for a quick breakfast or a revitalizing snack.

Chia seeds are an excellent source of alpha -linolenic acid (ALA), a type of omega 3 fatty acid that supports heart health. They are high in fiber and provide both soluble and insoluble fiber, aiding digestion, promoting satiety and help regulate blood sugar levels. Packed with antioxidants. which help reduce inflammation and they are a good source of protein containing all nine essential amino acids necessary for muscle repair and growth. They are high in calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, which support bone health.

Loading your blender properly for making a smoothie will ensure a smooth and creamy texture. Start with your water, spinach, flax, chia, vanilla powder or extract, frozen fruit, ice. Use the smoothie setting if your blender has one and let it complete the program. Or start using variable 1, slowly increase to the highest speed and blend for 45 seconds or until you have a smooth and creamy texture.

Equipment

  • High Powered Blender

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups cold water
  • 3 cups baby spinach
  • 2 tbsp flax seeds
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract or 1/8 tsp ground vanilla bean
  • 1 medjool date, pitted -optional
  • 1 banana very ripe, frozen, peeled
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen mango
  • 1/2 cup ice cubes – more or less depending on how thick you like your smoothie

Instructions

  • In a blender container of a high powered blender add the ingredients in the order given. Using the pre set smoothie setting let the blender work its magic. If your blender doesn't have a smoothie setting use the variable speed 1 and slowly turn up the speed to the highest setting and let it run for 45 seconds or until the desired texture is achieved. Pour into a container and enjoy!
  • If the smoothie is too thick add a little more cold water. If it is too thin add more frozen fruit or ice.
  • I like to double this recipe and either share it or save the extra serving for the next day. I pour it into 2 qt size mason jars. Put a lid on the extra smoothie and store in the fridge.
