Entertaining Tips:

Keep the menu simple. Make fewer recipes, but do them well and everyone will be satisfied.

Make a menu, choose your recipes, print them or note what cookbook they are in.

Make a list of ingredients you need.

Check the pantry, fridge and freezer for the ingredients you already have.

Make a grocery list and go shopping.

Read through your recipes more than once to be sure you understand how to make them.

Make as many things ahead of time as you can. Hummus, salad dressings and salsa can be made a day ahead. Baked corn tortilla chips can be made several days in advance and kept in a container with a lid.

Practice Mise en Place – the French term for having all of your ingredients, measured out, sliced diced, grated etc. before you start cooking. This streamlines the cooking process.

Most desserts can be made a day or two in advance. Baked items can be made further ahead and frozen. I always include a fresh fruit platter with seasonal fruits, a bowl of easy peel clementines or a simple Chocolate Sauce with berries.

Beverages can include sparkling water, sparkling juice, water infused with cucumbers, lime and mint. Serve hot tea or coffee as well as your adult beverages.

It’s perfectly ok to host a pot luck and let guests bring their favorite dish to share. It takes a lot of pressure off the host, and adds to a nice variety for all the guests.

Serving buffet style allows everyone to see what is available and they get to customize their plate, so everyone is happy.
